Weight Reduction

At Air Balloon Surgery all our practice nurses offer advice on Weight Reduction and Healthy Eating.

When determining whether weight is healthy or unhealthy doctors and nurses use a calculation which takes into account a persons height.

It is called the Body Mass Index ‘BMI’. Use this interactive tool to calculate your BMI.

  • A BMI of 19-25 is healthy,
  • If your BMI is more than 25 you are overweight.
  • Over 30 is classed as obese
  • Over 35 is very obese

Obesity is responsible for more than 9,000 premature deaths per year in England.

Obesity causes a number of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, some cancers, and type 2 diabetes.

The prevalence of obesity in children aged under 11 increased from 9.9 percent in 1995 to 13.7 percent in 2003 (Health Survey for England, 1995-2003). Prevalence has trebled since the 1980s, and well over half of all adults are either overweight or obese - almost 24 million adults.

Exercise and a balanced diet are the key factors in fat loss and weight reduction. If you are eating more calories than you are burning off throughout the day, the calories will be stored as fat.

If your BMI is more than 30 we may be able to help you lose weight by ‘prescribing’ vouchers to attend Sliming World for 3 months for free.
